Not since 1999 has the Serie A leader lost the title when it had a seven points lead like Inter have now. Then, Lazio, won (with a legendary team!). Now Juventus are chasing Inter, but it doesn’t look like the winning bet at all.
Inter Milan won in Rome against the giallorossi, scoring four goals, and even though they had some shocks in the game (they conceded two goals) it was obvious from the moon that they were the best team in Serie A.
Simone Inzaghi, who surprisingly took Inter to a Champions League final (haven’t you forgotten!), has reached full professional maturity. Under these conditions it’s hard to believe that anyone else can steal the title from Inter this year!
Juventus and AC Milan are already looking a bit out of sorts
In fact, who? Juventus? Juventus just lost at home to Udinese! And Udinese aren’t much of a force. Besides, this team can barely find the back of the net.
AC Milan? It’s adrift. Despite beating champions Napoli (who have long since thrown in the towel) in the last round (narrowly).
And as if it wasn’t enough that they’re seven points above second place, Inter Milan still have a play-off to play. With Atalanta, a tough team. But Inter seem, as I said, impossible to beat this year.
Bologna, Roma, Fiorentina, Lazio and Atalanta, Napoli also offer a good fight for a top spot. The reward? The European cups.
Plenty of variables and the constant Udinese
The relegation battle is also fierce: while Salernitana already seem doomed, Verona and Cagliari are still hoping. The battle will be fought in four, with Sassuolo and Empoli. It’s hard to believe that Udinese, who won away to Juventus!, will also enter the horde, although Udinese has only won three times this season (including the surprise win over Juventus!). At the same time, no other team in the big European leagues has its appetite for draws. It has already made thirteen, in just twenty-four rounds! So, as the Italians say: Udinese – segno in schedina X.
So, will we see a spectacular comeback at the end of the season after twenty-five years? Very, very, very unlikely.
The die has been cast and Inter Milan are the lucky ones. It’s quite spectacular how they are marching towards their 20th title in history!
